London Docklands Data Centre

Royal Docks to Host One of London’s Biggest Data Centres

A massive new data centre campus is planned for the Royal Docks in London, and it’s going to be one of the largest in the city. This project recently got the green light after the plans were approved by Newham Council’s strategic development committee.

The campus will have the capacity to handle 210 megawatts (MW) of power. It’s being designed to meet the demands of modern technology, like artificial intelligence (AI), while also focusing on sustainability, safety, and security. The project is being led by Ada Infrastructure, a company known for its commitment to sustainable digital infrastructure, along with GLP Capital Partners (GCP).

Jennifer Weitzel, president of Ada Infrastructure, explained that this new data centre is a significant step towards creating positive change through the use of sustainable technology. She emphasized that the project will not only use environmentally friendly materials and systems but will also invest in the surrounding communities. Weitzel highlighted that the design of the campus is future-ready, with energy-efficient systems, landscaping that benefits the environment, and strict safety protocols both physically and online.

Nick Cook, president of GCP Europe, expressed excitement about the project, stating that the team is thrilled to see their vision for a large-scale data centre at Docklands becoming a reality.

The campus will include three buildings, each capable of handling 70 MW of power, along with a community facility that can be used for multiple purposes. These buildings are being constructed with sustainability in mind, aiming to achieve an ‘excellent’ rating under the BREEAM certification, which is a mark of excellence for green buildings. Some of the innovative features of these buildings include energy solutions like air and liquid cooling that don’t rely on water evaporation, the use of low-carbon materials, and connections to a district heating system.

Robert De Jong, who directs the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability at the University of East London, also praised the project. He pointed out that the new data campus would bring significant improvements to the public spaces in the area, making it a better place for the local community. He mentioned that the project is highly sustainable and will improve access to public spaces and the Thames River.

In addition to the technological advancements, the campus also aims to support the local community by offering a facility for job training programs. These programs are expected to create more opportunities for careers in the technology sector for people living in the area.

Ada Infrastructure also plans to enhance the public spaces around the site by improving pathways for pedestrians and cyclists along the Thames River, making the area more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
